Bike Fit: FAQ
What is a Bicycle Fit?
That may be your first and most important question! A bike fit is the art and science of successfully joining a rider and a bicycle to achieve a comfortable, efficient, powerful, and safe union of human and machine. Learn more about bike fitting and contact us today to schedule your appointment.
Q: Who needs a bicycle fitting?
Everyone who rides a bike needs a fitting! Whether you are a recreational rider or in the pro peloton, your equipment must fit, just like your running shoes or ski boots must fit in order to be comfortable, perform well and prevent injury. Because we have three points of contact with a bike (hands, feet, seat), you can triple the importance of getting the right fit. Set up properly, every rider will have a better experience. Set up poorly, most will be in pain!
Q: Why do we fit bicycles to riders?
Cycling involves a unique interaction of rider and equipment; the bike should feel like an extension of our body. Because cycling is a learned skill, without the benefit of properly fitted equipment or instruction quite common to other sports such as golf, tennis and skiing. Because cycling is a learned skill, we may not always choose the best position, just like we might not naturally grip a golf club properly, or carve a ski turn without being taught how to do it. The Custom Fit Studio has the equipment and the training to help you get started the right way, or to improve upon your current fit.
Q: What is the perfect fit?
The perfect fit is comfortable. It facilitates efficiency of movement and the ability to generate power and speed. It allows the rider to easily breathe and deliver oxygen to the hard-working muscles. The rider can effectively balance, stabilize and easily handle the bike. The body is in alignment; the body and bike become one.
Q: How is the perfect fit achieved?
Most fitting systems apply static body measurements to a formula or computer software to come up with an “ideal position,” based on averages; not unlike “ideal body weights” published by insurance firms. At the Custom Fit Studio, our fits are more than just a bike fit—it’s a way to learn about your body, the root cause of your aches and pains, and how a proper fit will help you achieve your cycling goals.
Using 3D motion capture technology, the Retül system accurately measures every degree of movement and millimeter of distance, providing you and the fitter with data to support the choices made during the fit for your cycling equipment and personal riding experience.
Each rider brings their own “personal blueprint” to the bike determined by their unique history: lifestyle, goals, fitness level, body type, flexibility, range of motion, riding experience, past injuries, surgeries and current physical concerns. Consequently, our fitting process begins with an extensive interview and then progresses to a physical assessment and dynamic, on-bike positioning on our fully adjustable Retül Müve Size Cycle or your personal bike, beginning with the feet and traveling up the body to the hands. We apply sound principles of bio-mechanics to your unique blueprint to tailor the position just for you.
Q: What makes you different?
The Custom Fit Studio fits and measures dynamically, and in 3 dimensions. Simply put, we look at your body as it really is, under load and moving, fitting your bike to your body (not making your body conform to an ill fitting bike). Most bike shops won’t have dedicated fitting and motion capture; we have state of the art technology and years of nationally recognized bicycle fit experience behind them.
Q: Are the results immediate?
This depends, for some clients the results may be immediate. But in some cases especially in regard to overuse injuries, the sensation may be lessened, as it will take time to re-train the muscles to the new pattern and for the body to heal itself and adapt to a new position.
Q: Can I come in any time?
Due to our unique and specialized nature, the studio is open by appointment only to ensure focused one-on-one dedicated time with our clients. Please contact us for times and availability.
Q: What should I expect and bring?
The average fit and consultation takes approximately two and a half hours. You should be prepared to bring your bike and gear just like you are going on a ride. The Custom Fit Studio will provide a detailed comprehensive report of your fit detailing all measurements and discoveries/findings. Custom bike clients are provided with a Computer drawing of their individual frame and all components, details and sizes associated with your new bike in addition to the fit detail.
